What is the Threshold in a Compressor?
The threshold is the volume level (measured in decibels, dB) that defines the point at which the compressor starts to act. Any signal above this level will be compressed, while signals below the threshold will remain unchanged.
In other words, the threshold sets the limit that determines when the compressor kicks in.
Practical example:
- If you set the threshold to -20 dB, any part of the signal that exceeds this level will be compressed. Softer parts, which are below -20 dB, will not be affected.
How does the Threshold work?
When the audio signal exceeds the set threshold, the compressor reduces its volume according to the configured ratio. For example:
- If the threshold is at -10 dB and the ratio is 4:1, for every 4 dB the signal exceeds the threshold, only 1 dB will be allowed to pass.
- If the signal is at -6 dB (4 dB above the threshold), the compressor will reduce the excess to 1 dB, leaving the signal at -9 dB.
