Compression Objectives:

  • To cohere similar instruments in a group.
  • Control the dynamics of a set of instruments so they work better together.
  • Add character and glue to specific sections of the mix.

Techniques and Examples:

  1. Drums (Drum Bus):
    1. Example: SSL G Bus Compressor, known for its ability to add cohesion and punch to the drum group.
    2. Makeup Gain: Adjust to recover lost level and maintain drum energy.
    3. Release: Fast to Medium (40-80 ms) to allow compression to relax quickly between beats.
    4. Attack: Moderate (10-30 ms) to let initial transients pass and maintain punch.
    5. Threshold: Adjust to allow compression to act on the highest peaks, usually around -6 dB to -4 dB.
    6. Ratio: 4:1 to 6:1.
  2. Vocals (Vocal Bus):
    1. Example: LA-2A plugin, known for its smooth and musical compression on vocals.
    2. Makeup Gain: Adjust to maintain vocal presence in the mix.
    3. Release: Medium (40-60 ms) for natural control.
    4. Attack: Fast to Medium (5-20 ms) to control explosive consonants and maintain clarity.
    5. Threshold: Adjust to capture the most dynamic parts without overly compressing, usually around -10 dB.
    6. Ratio: 2:1 to 4:1.
  3. Guitars (Guitar Bus):
    1. Example: 1176 plugin, for its ability to add character and presence to guitars.
    2. Makeup Gain: Adjust to recover the level and keep the guitars at the front of the mix.
    3. Release: Medium-fast (30-50 ms) to maintain sustain.
    4. Attack: Moderate (10-25 ms) to let initial transients through and maintain aggressiveness.
    5. Threshold: Adjust to capture the peaks of the most dynamic parts, usually around -8 dB.
    6. Ratio: 4:1 to 8:1.
  4. Keyboards (Keys Bus):
    1. Example: FabFilter Pro-C2, known for its transparency and flexibility.
    2. Makeup Gain: Adjust to maintain presence in the mix.
    3. Release: Medium (40-60 ms) for natural compression.
    4. Attack: Moderate (10-20 ms) to preserve natural transients.
    5. Threshold: Adjust to capture the most dynamic parts, usually around -12 dB.
    6. Ratio: 2:1 to 4:1.
