Digital compressors are those that can be used as programs or plug-ins in software form. They work purely with digital data, with the signal that had already been converted from analog to digital during the recording process. Digital can have more flexibility. In general, they produce less noise, as they are freed from working with physical electrical devices. They are much more accurate than analog and can be easily managed, allowing parameters to be saved as presets for use in other projects. A disadvantage of digital compressors is that they can often sound too “cold”, because analog compressors always have a signal colored by the physical components, which adds a warm and robust tone to the signal. Analog compressors are those built on physical electronic components.
