Absorption

Absorption refers to the process by which materials reduce the energy of sound waves by converting it into heat, thus minimizing reflections. This is essential for controlling reverberation and echo in a studio. Porous materials such as acoustic foam, fiberglass and rock wool are highly effective in absorbing mid and high frequencies. These materials are placed on the walls, ceiling and sometimes the floor of the studio to minimize unwanted reflections and create a more controlled and dry sound environment.

Absorption of low frequencies is more challenging due to their longer wavelengths. Bass traps, which are devices specially designed to absorb low frequencies, are used for this purpose. Diffusion

Diffusion is the process of dispersing sound waves in multiple directions, creating a more uniform and natural sound field. Diffusers are devices used for this purpose. They are designed to break up sound waves and disperse them evenly throughout the room. Unlike absorptive materials, which eliminate sound energy, diffusers maintain sound energy but distribute it in a way that avoids energy buildup at certain points.

Diffusers are made of materials such as wood, plastic or rigid foam and have irregularly shaped surfaces, such as geometric or fractal patterns. These patterns allow sound waves to reflect in multiple directions, avoiding direct reflections and creating a more open and natural feeling of space. Diffusers are especially useful in the mixing and listening areas of the studio, where a balanced frequency response and detailed listening experience is desired.

Reflection

Sound reflection occurs when sound waves bounce off hard, smooth surfaces such as walls, ceilings and floors. These reflections can cause problems such as echo, excessive reverberation and early reflections, which can interfere with the clarity of direct sound and make accurate mixing difficult. In a recording studio, controlling reflections is essential to creating a balanced acoustic environment.

Early reflections are particularly problematic because they can combine with the direct sound and create comb filtering, an effect that causes peaks and valleys in the perceived frequency response. To control these reflections, absorptive panels are placed at the points of first reflection, which are the areas on the walls and ceiling where reflected sound arrives directly at the listening point. Identifying these points and treating them appropriately helps to improve the clarity and accuracy of monitoring.

Integration of Absorption, Diffusion and Reflection

Effective studio acoustic design involves a balanced combination of absorption, diffusion and reflection control. A space with too much absorption can sound too dry and lifeless, while a space with too much diffusion can lack clarity and definition. The goal is to create an environment where reflections are controlled but not completely eliminated, providing a balance between clarity and naturalness.

In a control room, for example, it is common to use absorption at the points of first reflection and bass traps in the corners to control low frequencies. Diffusers can be placed at the rear of the room to avoid strong reflections and create a more uniform sound field. In a recording room, the use of movable panels and acoustic curtains allows the amount of absorption and diffusion to be adjusted according to the specific needs of the session.
